Everything is ready to go76 viewsGot the heatsink mounted okay and the fan plugged in. Now let's see what it can do!

Chipset after modification74 viewsA nice layer of Arctic Silver Ceramique and the two bridges connected with graphite from an ordinary pencil. Never have had a problem with it :).

Memtest86+'ing a 386 SX-4072 viewsMemtest86+ gets old CPUs hot VERY quickly. I almost burnt my finger touching the CPU. That's my test bench setup with an old Trident VLB card on the box.

286 motherboard68 viewsIt can accept both DIP RAM chips (it has 1 MB of them) and 30-pin SIMM slots. I couldn't get the SIMMs to work correctly for some reason, perhaps the two memory types aren't mixable. The CPU is that big square in the middle-upper area, next to the AMI chip.

The Newegg/Lik-Sang shipment.67 viewsOrdered the chipset fan, and the crappy Linksys BEFSR41 router from Newegg. Incidentally, the S-Video cable I ordered for my Dreamcast from Lik-Sang came at the same time.

Motherboard again66 viewsClearer shot of the CPU. That giant black thing on the end is a 105 MB hard drive that is mounted directly onto an ISA card. The Maxtor off to the left is about 205 MB and the WD next to that is about 425 MB.

Yay, it works!61 viewsThe faster the fan spins, the brighter the LEDs get. It maxes out at about 6,000 RPM.

New card taken apart61 viewsThe 7950 taken apart. It has 512 MB of video RAM, and the core's 90nm, vs 110 for my old Go 7800. Hopefully that means it'll run cooler and run longer on battery.

The nForce4 Ultra before modification59 viewsI figured that since I was replacing the heatsink, I might as well modify the chipset to support SLi. You just cut through the epoxy on the right side bridge and connect the bridges using conductive paint or graphite.

Testing the chip contact56 viewsMaking sure the chip is touching the HSF properly, after all, the last thing I want is a toasted chipset. My dad had to grind the mounting holes out a bit so the heatsink's prong thingies would go into the mounting holes. Also had to grind out some of the edge of the heatsink to fit around a capacitor and crystal.

Disassembled55 viewsThe beginning of the project. It's not as hard as it looks, it took me less than 10 minutes to get it to that state.

|

Cooling installed55 viewsThe 7950 uses two heatpipes instead of one with the Go 7800. The Inspiron chassis blocks the left heatpipe, so I had to do some modifications to get it to fit...
